The current international and national trends in education are moving towards inclusive education. Special education defines the education of students with special needs. More clearly, the Bachelor of Education in Special Needs Education is designed to prepare teachers for teaching special needs children such as children with hearing impairment, mental retardation and visual impairment among other forms of special needs who are studying in special schools or in general schools under integrated setting. The programme is also designed to produce graduates who:
- Are capable of handling children/people with special needs professionally.
- Can apply scientific and technological knowledge, skills and abilities in the dissemination of education to the learners having a wide range of difficulties.
- Can promote quality, relevant and holistic education in learning institutions for learners with special needs in education.
- Can support research and development in special needs education, documentation and dissemination of relevant information.
The programme has several areas of specialization including deafblindness, visual impairments, hearing impairments, emotional and behavioral difficulties and physical handicaps. Besides training in special education, students will be required to choose two teaching subjects from the following combinations:
- History/Geography
- Kiswahili/History
- English/Literature
- Business/Mathematics
- Business/Information Technology
