Engineering TechnologyDescription of the Programme
The Bachelor of Science in Geology is a rigorous program that is designed to prepare students for entry into the workforce as practicing geoscientists. Geology is the study of planet Earth, its origin and evolution, its fundamental structure, and the properties of minerals, rocks, and fluids of which it’s composed. The course is focused on learning about the major earth systems and the geologic processes that create and shape them. You will learn about the origin, evolution, and future of the Earth, and gain a better understanding of the physical, chemical and biological processes that affect the development of the Earth System. The training aims to develop an in-depth understanding of earth surface processes, earth materials and geochemistry, structure and tectonics, rock-forming processes and paleoecology. Skills in interpreting geological data are gained through work in the classroom, laboratory, computer simulations, and in the field. The curriculum includes courses like Environmental Geology (includes Hydrogeology and Groundwater); Sedimentary Geology and Geobiology (includes Petroleum Geology); Crustal and Mantle Processes; and Mineral Deposit Geology. You will also study a range of core subjects to gain detailed knowledge and develop practical skills across the following areas: Earth’s history and past environments; Plate tectonics and structural geology; Igneous and metamorphic processes; Mineral resources, exploration and environmental remediation; Sedimentology, stratigraphy and fossils; Geochemistry, geochronology and geophysical techniques; Geospatial analysis and Field mapping among others. Areas of specialization include petrology, volcanology, structural geology, sedimentary geology, economic geology, hydrology, soil science, climate change, petroleum geology, and paleontology. A critical component of this degree programme is a field-based project in which students must demonstrate their ability to interpret a natural system and communicate their understanding in a professional manner.
