Strategic Management focuses on setting the direction for private, public and non-profit organizations to manage their resources to achieve their goals and objectives. Functions within strategic management include setting objectives, analyzing the competitive environment, analyzing the internal organization, evaluating strategies and implementing strategies. It incorporates elements of finance, accounting, human resource management, marketing, information technology as well as strategy. Specialists in strategic management plan the overall strategy for a company or an organization. You will be equipped with knowledge and skills to establish goals and strategies, identify the organization’s strengths and weaknesses and investigate opportunities that may expand the company’s presence in the marketplace, such as acquisitions and mergers. Strategic managers are often responsible for drafting the organization’s vision and mission statements, explaining the company’s philosophy in meeting its goals whereas at the highest levels in the organization the specialist may report to the chief executive officer and oversee a staff that includes managers, directors and analysts, some strategic management specialists may just oversee only one area of in an organization, for instance sales, marketing, pricing, buying or sourcing.
