Applied Linguistics involves the systematic study of language structure, the role of language in communication, the acquisition of first and subsequent languages and the status of language as the product of particular cultures and other social groups. The programme is concerned with the practical issues of language including language teaching, acquisition of second or foreign languages, multilingualism, language policy, maintenance of languages, cross-cultural communication and assessment and treatment of language difficulties. You will also study how the skills of second-language speakers develop and investigate how the social or cultural environment interacts with language. The course provides practical, critical and theoretical knowledge relevant to careers in the teaching of English as a Foreign Language or Second Language, foreign language education, and in social communication as well as the pathology of speech. the curriculum covers courses like first language acquisition; second language learning and teaching; intercultural communication; computer mediated communication; morphology; phonology; comparative linguistics; language, society and culture; translation studies; language communication; language and media; etc. Unlike students graduating from other philologies, Bachelor of Arts degree in Applied Linguistics graduates have a high level of specialization and a solid foundation in the core practical and theoretical concerns of applied linguistics that are central to second language acquisition, language education & planning and cross-cultural communication.
