Humanities & Social SciencesDescription of the Programme
Development Studies is a distinct field of multidisciplinary study, research and policy analysis directed at understanding the multidimensional nature of the development process which involves the reorganization and reorientation of the entire economic and social systems for community, national, regional and global transformation. It combines key insights from Economics, Political Science, Sociology and Management in order to develop, manage and evaluate approaches for institutionalizing sustainable improvements in people’s quality of life. The programme resonates with the needs of the devolved governments as stipulated in the new constitution with the need to have people in the rural areas fully involved in the development process. The programme offers a better understanding, and indeed offers possible solutions to a wide range of social, economic and institutional challenges facing developing countries. Students are trained to appreciate diverse perspectives, undertake development research, analyze development policies and manage development interventions. The programme examines themes such as debt and global poverty, environmental sustainability, the relationship between citizens and the state, culture and human rights, globalization, national sovereignty, gender inequity, social exclusion, health, and migration among others. Students will also be equipped with gender development skills to enable them to design and facilitate development events that lead to Gender Equity in all human development endeavours.
