Humanities & Social SciencesDescription of the Programme
Sociology is the study of society. It examines social life, cultural and social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behaviour. Sociology involves asking questions about human life and society, developing understandings of our diverse and rapidly changing world, and identifying the causes of—and solutions to—social problems. You will study theory and social research methods, social policy and the state, gender, sexuality, crime and punishment, race and ethnicity, social class, families, social interaction, globalization, development, social change, media and popular culture among others. Sociologists understand social inequality, patterns of behavior, forces for social change and resistance, and how social systems work. The programme develops analytical skills and the ability to understand issues within many distinctive perspectives. Sociology offers a range of research techniques that can be applied to virtually any aspect of social life: street crime and delinquency, corporate growth or downsizing, societal welfare, health, problems of peace, war, and terrorism among others. Because sociology addresses the most challenging issues of our time, it is a rapidly expanding field whose potential is increasingly tapped by those who craft policies and create programs.
