Bachelor of Arts in Translation Studies

Description of the Programme

This course is designed to provide the training and theoretical background to equip you to work as a professional interpreter and translator. Students will receive training in the principal modes and areas of translation and interpreting, a profession that is present in many spheres and which requires multiple skills within different language combinations. Translation and interpreting involve converting the meaning of written or spoken content from one language to another. While translation deals with written materials, interpreting refers to the oral translation or through sign language. Translators work with various documents including literary texts, web copy, reports, legal papers, instructional guides, brochures and more. Interpreters facilitate communication in different contexts such as international conferences and events, business meetings, video seminars or criminal justice proceedings. The basic modes of translation and interpreting are written translation, screen translation, localisation, sight translation, liaison interpreting and consecutive interpreting both in traditional and consolidated areas of professional practice (specialised and editorial translation) and in newer areas in our country (translation and interpreting in hospitals, education centres, courts of law, etc.). Depending on the university, the following learning tracks are offered: Specialised Translation (legal, financial, technical and scientific texts), Editorial Translation, Social and Institutional Interpreting and Translation. Upon graduation, you will become a qualified translator or interpreter equipped with professional knowledge, skills and experience valued by leading organisations.
