Bachelor of Science (Geophysics)

Description of the Programme Geophysics is an interdisciplinary physical science that applies the knowledge, laws and techniques of physics, mathematics and chemistry to understanding the structure, subsurface and dynamic processes of the earth and its environment. It involves the study of the inaccessible earth using physical measurements and the interpretation of these measurements in terms of subsurface structures and phenomena. Geophysicists explore natural resources such as oil, minerals and groundwater, and also help solve environmental engineering problems, from natural hazards to pollution monitoring. The curriculum introduces the global properties of the Earth (gravity, magnetic field, crustal motions, interior dynamics) and the determination of near-surface and interior properties through the use of seismology, electromagnetics, potential fields, remote sensing, geodesy and GPS. The curriculum provides a broad grounding in physical and mathematical fundamentals useful for future graduate study or for work in energy, natural resource or engineering industries. Students will gain experience in the integrated application of geologic observations and geophysical measurements to the analysis of Earth science and related engineering problems using current, industry-standard computational and GIS tools. The training further introduces the students to geophysical processes, geology, electronic measurement, experiment or survey design, and scientific computing or data processing, methods of analyzing and imaging the earth, physical properties of matter as well as the transmission and dissipation of energy.  Field trips and laboratory research are important components of geophysics training.
