Engineering TechnologyDescription of the Programme
The Bachelor of Science in Geomatics and Geospatial Information Systems is designed to train students on various methods and techniques of acquiring, storing, managing, processing, analyzing, modelling and dissemination geo-referenced information (in the form of maps, plans, etc.) and how to apply the intelligence in many functions such as:
- Web mapping and creation of dynamic and interactive maps for use on the internet
- Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
- Oil Exploration
- Charting Environmental Patterns and Problems
- Satellite Communication
- Navigation and guidance of craft using satellite and inertial navigation systems
technology - Vehicle tracking and in intelligent transport systems (ITS) using satellite
positioning techniques - Measurement and Mapping of Topography-topographic mapping
The programme essentially integrates modern spatial data acquisition methods with computer-based data management systems. Over 80% of all data handled in the world today contains a spatial/location/positional component. In addition, there is a growing interest from various disciplines to integrate the spatial component into their daily business for instance air, sea and ground navigation. The programme covers computing, surveying techniques, cartographic techniques, photogrammetry, geodesy, planning, engineering surveying, geographic information systems, remote sensing, digital mapping, highway engineering, mining surveying, hydrographic mapping, transportation engineering, real property management, environment and satellite geodesy among other courses.
