Description of the Programme

Bachelor of Pharmacy is a professional degree programme designed for students who wish to pursue careers in different pharmacy practice settings, management and research. In Kenya, the ratio of pharmacists to the population remains far below that recommended by the World Health Organization. To address this problem, the government has put in place strategies to strengthen the pharmacy workforce through government policies aimed at increased training of pharmacists. You gain in-depth knowledge about the chemical, physical and biological properties of medicines, how medications work, their usage and their clinical effects. The program integrates different streams of study including quality use of medication; dosage form design; social and professional aspects of pharmacy; drug discovery; the biological fate of drugs; and data analysis in pharmacy among others. You will learn about the formulation of medicines and their effects on the body and develop the knowledge, experience and expertise to make a difference as a medicines expert and health care professional. Graduates will have a comprehensive understanding and knowledge in pharmaceutics, pharmaco-therapeutics and pharmacy practice; decision-making skills to identify and manage complex therapeutic problems within a multidisciplinary healthcare team; the ability to develop an individual healthcare plan for patients with complex conditions; and an ability to practice effectively, efficiently, ethically and at `best practice’ standards. On completing this program you need to undertake a one-year internship in order to get registration by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
