Bachelor of Science (Environmental Chemistry)

Description of the Programme

Environmental Chemistry is a multifaceted field that focuses on the study of chemical processes, their impacts, the cycling and motility influencing the composition and chemical makeup of air, water and soils. The field of Environmental Chemistry has been developing for years, especially since we became aware of the enormous damage being done to the environment through the usage of fertilizers and pesticides, the production and disposal of chemicals, fuel development & transport and other major industrial advances. The field truly deals with chemistry in the environment, and the natural phenomena that may transport them or affect their mobility, retention or alteration such as acid rain, groundwater contamination, ocean acidification and ozone depletion. Environmental chemistry also deals with processes that affect the bioavailability of pollutants and toxicity in natural ecosystems. The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Chemistry offers you a rigorous education both in traditional chemistry and a structured, interdisciplinary training crossing chemistry and environmental science. This program provides students with a core education in Environmental Analytical Chemistry; Atmospheric Chemistry; Marine Chemistry; Petro-chemistry; Soil Chemistry, Pollution and Remediation; Air Chemistry; Environmental Instrumental Analysis; Chemical Toxicology; Natural Resource Extraction and Restoration Processes; Environmental Impact Assessment and Audit; Forensic Chemistry; Climate Change; Principles, Theory and Practice of Cleaner Production; etc. Students will also have the opportunity to conduct research with environmental chemistry faculty in the areas of green chemistry and organic photochemistry, biosensor technology for monitoring of pollution, energy storage materials, microscopic detection of viruses and catalysis for solar energy conversion.
