Bachelor of Science (Biochemistry)

Description of the Programme

Biochemistry aims at imparting an understanding of the molecular basis of life in animals and plants. The course is multi-disciplinary and focuses on the structure and function of molecules as well as their interaction to create the phenomenon of life. Biochemistry particularly looks at how this interaction is translated into basic metabolism, energy transduction, defense and physical responses for the purposes of growth and development. Various strategies designed to enhance food security and control disease are adequately addressed in the areas of Biotechnology, Molecular Biology and Pharmacology. These key areas of specialization form part of the recent advances in biochemistry and are covered in this programme. Some of the topics covered in the curriculum include Basic Metabolism, Immunochemistry, Biochemical Endocrinology, Pharmacognosy, Medical Biochemistry, Recombinant DNA technology, Cell biochemistry, Metabolic biochemistry, Regulation of gene expression, DNA technology, Molecular Immunology, Nucleic acid biochemistry, Plant biochemistry, Molecular biology and signal transduction among others. Programs in Biochemistry include essential prerequisite courses for life science professional schools (e.g. Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nutrition, Veterinary Medicine) and graduate studies in many areas of the life sciences. Graduates at all levels find employment in academia, industry and other life science research enterprises.
