Health SciencesDescription of the Programme
Public health focuses on the health of populations and communities rather than individuals, from promoting good health to preventing disease as well as managing illness and disability. The aim of public health is to improve the health and quality of life of a population by working to prevent disease, prolong life and promote health by scientifically analyzing populations and generating solutions to problems. The programme is therefore designed to appeal to students with interests in “population” rather than “individual” health. The programme focuses on developing, implementing and evaluating policies and programs to promote health, prevent disease and injury as well as undertake public health research. Students will develop skills in obtaining, reviewing and analyzing health information; learn about determinants of health and key issues affecting the health of populations. They will also acquire the knowledge and skills required for planning and managing health programs and projects aimed at improving the health of the population. The programme adopts an interdisciplinary focus and it is designed to equip learners with in-depth knowledge and skills in the core concepts and disciplines of public health including epidemiology, research and statistics in health, health behavior, biostatistics, environmental health and health administration, as well as in the organization, evaluation, planning and conduct of public and community health services. Studies will also include aspects of biomedical sciences (such as pharmacology and physiology) and social sciences (such as sociology).
