Description of the Programme

Medical Microbiology is a field of scientific study that includes the study of bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites, all of which can be seen as the cause, and often part of the cure, for various diseases. The programme aims to produce Medical Microbiologists to fit various sectors of our health care system, including medical research institutions, pharmaceutical industries, quality control laboratories and training institutions like universities and polytechnics/colleges among others.  Medical microbiology is important because there is hardly an area of medicine unaffected by microbes. From influenza infections to the ongoing threat of HIV, if you choose Medical Microbiology you will be studying a course that is significant to human health on a global scale and vital for the medical advances that save lives all over the world. The programme is designed to provide graduates with a broad foundation in the diverse topics that constitute modern microbiology. Training in both theory and practicals is imparted to the students covering all the sub-specialities including Parasitology, Medical Virology, Mycology and Immunology, Microbial Diversity, Medical Instrumentation, Medical Techniques, Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Immunohaematology, Systemic and Diagnostic Bacteriology, General Pathology, Ethics and Risks in Medical Microbiology, Field Attachment, etc.
