Bachelor of Science in Optometry and Vision Sciences degree programme prepares students to meet the challenges of expanding primary eye care as the practice of optometry evolves over the coming decades. With the current emphasis on good health and disease prevention and the increased demands for vision care as a result of the aging population and other factors, there is a continuing need for highly qualified optometrists. You will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to detect, diagnose and manage eye diseases and other vision-related conditions. You will be specifically educated and clinically trained to:
- Carry out a full examination of eyes and integrity of the visual pathways using a variety of tests and procedures.
- Diagnose vision problems or impairments
- Prescribe optical aids in the form of spectacles and contact lenses
- Provide visual training and offer advice necessary for the patient’s well-being
You will be able to use visual aids, optical devices and imaging techniques to fully evaluate how the visual system works. The programme covers Fundamentals of Optometry; Ophthalmic Concepts; Contact Lenses; Optics and Ophthalmic Instrumentation; Pharmacology for Optometry; Disease Processes of the Eye; Binocular Vision, Paediatrics and Low Vision; Ocular Anatomy and Physiology; Managing Optics Business and Ethics; etc. Optometrists work with other health professionals including general medical practitioners and ophthalmologists to ensure the best eye and vision health outcomes for the population.
