Bachelor of Applied Science (Geo-informatics)

Description of the Programme

Bachelor of Applied Science in Geo-informatics is designed to prepare students for careers in the fields of Geoinformation technology, Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing, Environmental management,  Surveying  and  Geomatics by imparting both theoretical and practical knowledge in Spatial data acquisition, data processing, data management, information extraction and presentation for governance (i.e. policy development, development planning, development monitoring and decision making) in a wide range of human undertakings and professional fields; Problem analysis and structuring for purposes of designing effective solutions using remote sensing, geographic information science, database technology, spatial/temporal modeling and software development principles; and Geographic Information Systems development and effective application to the solution of key developmental problems.

They will also learn to design and develop algorithms, models, and tools that can process geo-spatial data into trustworthy, actionable information. Students will acquire knowledge and skills to:

  • Accurately measure and collect information about the earth’s surface using a combination of technologies ranging from ground-based sensors, airborne sensors and space-borne sensors.
  • Develop and utilize remote sensing systems and geographic information systems for studying the environment, monitoring and analyzing earth resources.
  • Analyze specific sector problems and design practical solutions.
  • Use  cartographic  and  geo-visualization   techniques  to  create  effective maps  and  3D visualizations for supporting planning  and decision making

Students will be well-grounded in the use of GIS to solve diverse problems in fields such as land administration and management, natural resources management and for mineral resources management, environmental management, disaster management as well as for urban and regional planning. Some of the major courses include Introduction to GIS, Introduction to Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry, Digital Mapping and Image Processing, Surveying, Computer-aided Drawing/Drafting, Introduction to Environmental Engineering, Spatial Data Analysis and Management, Geo-Databases, Spatial Decision Support System, GIS Programming, Global Positioning Systems, etc. Students graduate with experience gained through internships and hands-on training in software packages or modern sensor systems among others.
