Bachelor of Arts in History and Archaeology allows you to study the past not just through texts and images but through material remains. The programme is aimed at those with a particular interest in the full range of human history, from the first hunter-gatherers to the complex societies of the medieval and modern periods. Students will have the opportunity to participate actively in field work. In history, you will be grounded in the main themes of history through a combination of both broad and detailed focuses on particular aspects of the past, study of a range of time periods and study of different geographical areas. Areas covered ranges from pre-history through to the twenty-first century incorporating international, economic, political, cultural and social history and many geographical areas including the Americas, parts of Asia, Africa and Europe. In archaeology, you will study past human societies through the material things people leave behind. The course aims to equip graduates with a broad knowledge of archaeological theories and techniques to enable them explore both the academic and practical dimensions of a uniquely fascinating discipline. Modules are designed to cover wide range of areas from microscopic analysis of ancient artefacts to the exploration of entire fossilised landscapes; from understanding prehistoric villages to recording historic buildings. The subject is broad, multi-disciplinary and dynamic.
