The discipline of Political Science involves the study of politics, government and public policy. The broad political science curriculum encompasses the provision of knowledge of both theory and practice of authority, political power and justice with a focus on Kenya and other systems around the world. The programme is designed to prepare students for careers in politics, public service, the private sector, international organizations and Foreign Service. Political Science entails the study of both national and international political systems and covers a very extensive field that incorporates the study of modern and historical political systems, government policies and procedures, public administration, public affairs and international relations. The programme also focuses on the formation of institutions and processes that make, execute and enforce laws in the country. The programme explores the fundamental issues, institutions, ideas and actors that control and dominate local, national and international politics. It focuses on how we engage in politics and how the governments and other organs of the state exercise power and make decisions that shape the lives of the citizens. The discipline of Political Science also stresses critical reasoning and reasoned analysis of political behaviour, evaluation of societal principles and logical expression of thought. These skills are invaluable to public officials, professionals, educators and researchers. Some of the topics covered include political theory, globalization and international relations, democratic theory and human rights, comparative politics, public policymaking and administration, political economy, political parties and interest groups, contemporary social issues and research methods among others. The main objective is to understand how different political systems in the world works. This enhances active citizenship by producing graduates who are aware of their political rights and responsibilities, provide students with the skills required for effective and active participation in the democratic processes and also provides a solid foundation for careers in government, politics, public service, diplomacy and international relations and civil activism.
