Description of the Programme

Social Work is the activity of helping communities, groups, and individuals restore or enhance their capacity for living in favourable social conditions. The Bachelor of Social Work combines core knowledge and skills in social work, social policy and research. Major subjects of study covered within the course’s curriculum include sociology, society, social work, social work and the law, human development, professional ethics, current welfare and social issues in Kenyan society and a range of related social science disciplines. The course is particularly suited for candidates aspiring to work in social welfare sectors, NGOs, healthcare, adoption, environmental protection and social and developmental agencies across both government and private sectors.  The trainees will acquire professional skills and adequate knowledge to help clients deal with their emotional and psychological problems. They work with individuals, groups and communities, such as abused children; people with disabilities; people suffering homelessness, poverty, violence, loss and grief, chronic pain, abuses and diseases like cancer, AIDS, etc. They also deal with gay and lesbian issues, people with mental health issues, victims and perpetrators of domestic violence, survivors of sexual abuse, asylum seekers, elderly people, and people with drug and alcohol issues among others.
