Description of the Programme

Dentistry is the art and science devoted to maintaining the health of the teeth, gums and other hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity and adjacent structures.  A dentist is a scientist and clinician dedicated to the highest standards of health through prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases and conditions. Bachelor of Dental Surgery students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills required to care for patients, prevent, diagnose and treat oral diseases and abnormalities. The programme is a professional course designed to produce general dental practitioners who are knowledgeable, clinically and technically competent and socially responsible and are able to function effectively as members of the nation’s healthcare delivery system and who adhere to the highest standards of professionals’ ethics and conduct. The first two years is dedicated to pre-clinical dental science and basic medical science teaching with exposure to clinical dentistry as early as in the first year. The final three years are spent in the dental school and hospital where candidates practice their clinical skills in dentistry as well as related medical practice. A comprehensive dentistry internship programme is designed to offer the widest possible experience and understanding in all disciplines of dentistry in order to allow a smooth transition from dental school to dental practice. In addition to the clinical experience that the intern will receive, there is also an intensive didactic program composed of advanced education seminars, treatment planning sessions, case presentations, article critiques, research projects and hospital rounds. Upon graduation, you will be ready to enter the work-force, with extensive clinical experience and in-depth knowledge of general practice in dentistry, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics, oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery and public health.
