Engineering TechnologyDescription of the Programme
The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering is geared towards the preparation of students for the lifelong practice of mechanical engineering and for immediate entry to positions in the industry. Students will be trained to become technical leaders for various industrial, commercial, consulting and governmental organizations. Mechanical engineers apply the principles of force, motion, energy and thermal fluids to design tools and processes needed for human, material and economic benefit of society. They also design, build, test and maintain all kinds of machines from robots to cars to space vehicles. They are continually designing, building and testing new forms of environmentally safe technologies, such as solar energy, solar vehicles, and wave and wind energy. They are also involved in advanced manufacturing, materials handling, power technology, automotive technology and biomechanics. The programme emphasizes on application of mechanical engineering concepts, particularly in design and manufacturing. Some of the technical subjects covered in the programme include engineering computing and instrumentation; mechanical engineering design; control of machines and processes; process design and analysis; manufacturing process analysis; transport and engine technologies; dynamics of engineering systems; bulk solids handling technology; robotics and automation; thermodynamics, heat transfer, combustion and aerodynamics. Students must undergo a mandatory practical training attachment and also undertake a suitable engineering project under the supervision of a member of the academic staff.
