Computing & Information TechnologyDescription of the Programme
Applied Computer Science is the point where computing, science, design and society meet. Like computer science, applied computer science focuses on technical computing concepts – but it goes beyond that. Applied computer scientists work in fields related to the creation and management of software, big data, analytics, computing and structure of information systems. You will learn how technologies are integrated to build systems, how to find out what your users need their software to do and how to design useful and usable software. Applied computing has a strong practical focus and it emphasises hands-on opportunities to gain competence with a range of technologies including databases; current programming; languages and technology; software engineering; mobile technology; networking; operating systems management; graphic applications; data integration; distributed systems; website development tools; and visual software development environments. You will learn to use these tools to solve real problems, focusing on business applications. Since computing is a fast-changing field, you will also learn how to adapt to new technologies – how to quickly develop skills in new software technology by building on what you know about how software-based systems work. You will also investigate how fundamental theories can be translated into real-world applications and be equipped with technical proficiency, project management skills, communication expertise and analytical skills needed to develop innovative solutions to the toughest technology challenges.
