Molecular and Cell Biology is the study of what cells are, what makes them work, how they are put together, how they associate and interact, what makes them differ from each other, what goes wrong in disease states, and, ultimately, how to intervene in these processes in some beneficial way to correct disease states. The B.Sc in Cell and Molecular Biology programme emphasizes the understanding of the organization and regulation of cell function at the molecular level. This includes knowledge of the structure and function of biomolecules as well as their involvement in various cellular activities, reproduction and growth of the organism. This programme is designed to help students understand the mechanisms of cell and molecular biology techniques which will help resolve many questions related to the functions of life systems. In addition, knowledge and skills in this area will lead to the rapid development of the biotechnology industry based on the manipulation of life-stage system cells to produce new products such as drugs for the treatment of various human and animal diseases, high-quality crop genes, as well as quality health products. Some of the major investigations that have been carried out by molecular biologists include manipulating genetic material and developing potentially useful applications (now called genetic engineering); the problems of understanding cancer and regulation of cell proliferation; and the molecular relations between viruses (such as HIV) among other incredible range of investigations.
