Pure & Applied SciencesDescription of the Programme
Conservation Biology is the study of the Earth’s biodiversity and is concerned with managing and protecting species and ecosystems. Conservation Biologists work with non-government and government agencies to explore the connection of scientific research with policy and management to come up with strategies to minimize the impact of humans on their environment. One of the biggest problems facing Conservation Biologists across the globe is the rapid extinction rate of ecosystems, plant and animal species. Students will learn how to protect plant and animal species as well as the ecosystemS from extinction and acquire the necessary experience and skills in ecosystem management, evolutionary biology, genetics, ecology and conservation. The programme is also designed to provide students with a clear understanding of how conservation policy is developed and implemented in political, social and economic contexts. Courses in the curriculum include biology, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, plant and animal ecology, landscape science, etc. Your studies will also focus on research training and experience in ecology and conservation biology, preparing you for a research project in the final year. As a graduate of this programme, you will be equipped with the knowledge and expertise to provide professional advice and scientific data as a policymaker or a resource manager.
