The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health is designed to produce Environmental Health professionals equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to address health issues by effectively responding to deteriorating environmental conditions that affect human health. The work of environmental health professionals include monitoring air and water quality, noise pollution, controlling for toxic pesticides and substances, conducting restaurant inspections and promoting healthy land use and housing. The programme intends to produce environmental health practitioners who will:
- Serve as first responders in the event of emergencies such as chemical spills.
- Work with government or non-profit agencies in areas such as bioterrorism or biodefense.
- Work in the corporate world in health safety communications or informatics.
You will study how the environment influences human health and disease. The programme focuses on a variety of topics including covers air, food and water quality; environmental law; toxicology; environmental analysis; human health risk assessment; environmental contaminants (e.g., chemical, nuclear, biological agents); disease prevention; communicable disease outbreaks; human health and environmental impacts of catastrophes among other topics. The need for more experts in environmental health comes from an increase in environmental health threats such as the outbreak of Coronavirus, SARS, West Nile Virus, influenza and E-Coli; Bio-/agro-terrorism (intentional tainting of food); the emergence of new threats like chemical contaminants; and health impacts from environmental catastrophes such as chemical spills and hurricanes among others.
