Description of the Programme

Nutrition is the science of how the foods we eat affect our health. Dietetics is the practical application of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of disease. The Bachelor of Science in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics degree programme provides students with rigorous, professional and service-oriented training through an interdisciplinary approach that combines courses in food, nutrition and dietetics; human ecology; sciences; business; and social sciences. The programme covers specialized topics in food processing, food selection and preparation, the quantity of food production, food processing, preservation, storage, quality assurance, product development, nutrition needs for all stages of life, postharvest, packaging, microbiological and chemical analysis of foods, food systems management, food safety and medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, which are affected by diet among other topics. You will gain in-depth knowledge into this multi-faceted discipline and gain an appreciation of the broad scope of food in society, nutritional and biomedical science, and the role of nutrition in health and disease. You will gain the requisite knowledge and skills to prevent and treat illnesses by promoting healthy eating habits and recommending dietary modifications. Therefore, Food, Nutrition and Dietetics is exciting and challenging area of study because there are many diseases that are related to nutrition, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer, diabetes and obesity. Practical learning is an important component of the course. Therefore, students are required to gain industrial experience in a healthcare facility, community nutrition program, or food service institution.
