Pure & Applied SciencesDescription of the Programme
Forensic Biology involves the use of biological knowledge and laboratory techniques in law enforcement, criminal justice, state security and related fields. This increasingly important discipline is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in biology, law and criminal justice, chemistry, forensic anthropology, forensic pathology, psychology, human identification, mathematics, forensic toxicology, forensic botany and photography among other areas to give students the skills and background needed to become accomplished forensic biologists. The programme places heavy emphasis on practical, hands-on experience through a comprehensive laboratory component. In the forensic and biology laboratories, students will receive in-depth training and participate in crime scene investigation, evidence collection, tissue sampling and analysis as well as DNA and biological specimen analysis techniques with an emphasis on the gathering of forensic evidence and its presentation in court. Students will develop a diverse set of skills that professional investigators need to perform DNA analysis, analyze crime scenes, conduct cause-of-death investigations and write up and present test findings. As a graduate of this program, you will become part of a team of experts that has had and will continue to have an impact in the field of forensic science.
