Description of the Programme

Bachelor of Science in Health Records and Informatics aims to train and develop highly qualified and ethical health professionals who are experts in managing patient health information and medical records, administering computer information systems and coding the diagnoses and procedures for healthcare services provided to patients. Health Records and Informatics professionals are responsible for maintaining and safeguarding the most confidential patient data, including medical histories, laboratory test reports, diagnoses, treatment plans, insurance information, medications and the notes of doctors and nurses. They also work as a critical link between doctors, insurance providers and patients. They manage health records in a way that is consistent with the medical, administrative, ethical and legal requirements. The medical record of a patient is a powerful tool that allows the treating physician to track the patient’s medical history and identify problems or patterns in the provision of quality health care. Students will be prepared to administer electronic medical/health records systems and prepare health informatics reports that doctors, nurses and other health care providers rely on to deliver quality health care. You can expect to take some of the following courses: Medical and procedural terminology; Health information technology; Health data management; Medical reimbursement practices; Health data research; Clinical coding; and Electronic healthcare spreadsheets and databases among other key courses. You will learn procedural skills for working in different medical facilities as well as technical skills, especially in using different electronic record systems.
