Bachelor of Science (Horticulture)

Description of the Programme

Horticulture is the agronomic science that deals with the conservation, improvement, growing, production, processing, distribution and utilization of trees, vegetables, flowers, fruits and other ornamental plants as well as landscape architecture. Being a fast-growing and major sub-sector of the agricultural industry in Kenya, the contribution of horticulture towards both small-scale and large-scale farm incomes, employment, foreign exchange earnings and food security cannot be overemphasized. That notwithstanding, the full potential of horticulture in Kenya is yet to be realized, hence the need for a highly qualified workforce to drive the industry. Graduates will therefore gain advanced practical and theoretical skills in general horticulture, and through research, extension, marketing and entrepreneurship, be able to increase production and use of horticultural and other crops for human consumption, medical purposes or simply for aesthetic pleasure. The programme also combines science and technology with art and design principles and is divided into several branches including pomology, oreliculture, viticulture, floriculture, oenology and landscape architecture. Course topics in horticulture cover plant biotechnology, environmental and horticultural biology, urban ecology, wild plant identification, and fruit development among others. You will combine theoretical information with practical training in greenhouses.
