Pure & Applied SciencesDescription of the Programme
The aim of programme is to equip the trainees with knowledge and skills relevant to applied aspects of biological sciences. Applied Biology is a discipline that is currently at the forefront of technological developments, scientific research and underpins a number of premier industries across the globe. These include the Healthcare and Biopharmaceutical sectors, Biotechnology, Food industries, Bioanalytical and Diagnostics and many more. This programme provides students with an opportunity to study the key areas in Applied Biology including Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Food Science, Biotechnology, Bio-forensics, Genetics, and Healthcare. A lot of emphasis is placed on giving the students hands-on experience and practical knowledge and skills through elaborate laboratory work and industrial based learning achieved through industrial attachments. You will be able to understand how organisms work from the sub-cellular to the whole organism level. The programme also involves the use of living organisms (mostly microbes) to produce useful products including traditional processes like cheese making, brewing and modern developments such as genetic engineering which can lead to new drugs against cancer and other diseases. Upon completion of the programme, graduates can administer or manage efficiently the day to day operations in science laboratories in learning and research institutions as well as in industries involved in the production of bio-products as well as in environmental conservation and waste management.
