Bachelor of Science in Biology (Botany or Zoology Option)

Description of the Programme  Refer to Bachelor of Science (Biology) (https://ccap.co.ke/course/bachelor-of-science-biology/) Botany Major Botany is the scientific study of all aspects of the biology of plants. It involves the study of the ecology, physiology, systematic, development and natural history of plants. You will learn: How plants evolve and how they contribute to biodiversity. How plants function at the cellular, tissue, organ, and organismal levels. How plants interact with each other and its impact on their physical environment. The study of botany aims at increasing and expanding the existing body of knowledge about plants so as to solve problems in many fields including ecology, agriculture and horticulture. The challenging and rigorous curriculum is designed to provide both a broad and solid background in the breadth of biology as well as a depth of knowledge in botany. Zoology Major Zoology is the scientific study of all aspects of the biology of animals, including human beings and the many invertebrates and vertebrate animal species that inhabit the earth. Fundamental to the study of Zoology is the understanding and appreciation of the evolution and diversity of animals, gained through scientific research into aspects of the morphology, behaviour, development and genetics, ecology, biochemistry, physiology and molecular biology of animals. The programme incorporates knowledge of how animals function at the cellular, tissue, organ and organismal levels. As a zoology student, you will explore the interactions and relationships of animals with their biological and physical environments at individual, community, population and ecosystem levels and how they contribute to biodiversity. The study of zoology encompasses not only learning about what we currently know about animals, but also extensive research to expand the existing body of knowledge about animals in order to help address problems in diverse fields including agriculture, medicine and ecology. Practical experience in zoological research will provide you with invaluable knowledge and skills for the world of work. Minimum Entry Requirements through KUCCPS   Duration of the Programme 4 years equivalent to 8 semesters Institutions offering the programme Career Prospects (Botany Option) Botanists study a wide variety of organisms ranging from algae to flowering plants and make use of different approaches involving the tools of ecology to those of molecular biology. Botanists work in the following fields spread across public and private sectors: Commercial greenhouses Pharmaceutical industries Agricultural companies and businesses Natural resource managers Government agencies Ecological consultants Arboreta and gardens Faculty or research positions in Universities Wildlife conservation and management agencies Agricultural and livestock research institutes Environmental protection and management agencies  Career Prospects (Zoology Option) Students with a degree in zoology can pursue a variety of careers in: Scientific and industrial research organizations Human and veterinary medicine Environmental protection and management agencies Government departments and agencies National parks and game reserves Research institutes such as the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) Zoological gardens Consultancy or self-employment in areas of environmental impact assessment studies, aquaculture, biotechnology, conservation, field educational studies, ecotourism and national heritage work. Wildlife conservation and management agencies Agricultural and livestock research institutes Local and international marine and fisheries organizations Conservation authorities Medical laboratories Education institutions Museums Other potential avenues of self-employment are in animal breeding; the production of nature films, books and multimedia presentations; and private zoos.
