Description of the Programme
Industrial biotechnology is the application of biotechnology for industrial purposes, including manufacturing, alternative energy (bioenergy), and biomaterials. Industrial Biotechnology remains an essential discipline that continues to play a catalytic role in industrial development. The technology taught in this degree programme focuses on the use of biological resources as input to biobased processes which are environmentally and economically sustainable. Students will learn the latest industrial biotechnology applications that can be used to come up with new bioproducts, for instance, plant-based biodegradable plastics; using biorefineries to generate transport fuels, electricity and chemicals; develop and modify new industrial processes like using enzymes to replace harsh chemicals used in pulp, paper and textile industry; onsite treatment of industrial wastewater using biological mediums such as microbes; reduce the adverse environmental impact of manufacturing to provide energy and water savings by adding enzymes in detergents hence allowing clothes to be washed in less water and lower temperatures; etc. Industrial Biotechnology has advanced to include areas such as Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Textile Processing, Bioenergy systems, Antimicrobial plant products, Marine Biotechnology, etc. All these courses are currently playing an important role in research aimed at providing alternative sources of energy, food and medicine as well as in the prevention of environmental pollution. The course covers subjects like Chemical Reaction Engineering, Genetic Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering Mass Transfer and Separation, Bioinformatics, etc. You will get extensive, hands-on training in various aspects of genetic modification and assay development, as well as training in the regulatory, financial and organizational skills needed to work in the industrial biotechnology field. Each student will be expected to complete a substantial research project addressing the industrial, regulatory and management issues surrounding industrial biotechnology and also undertake an internship in the industrial biotechnology industry.
