Computing & Information TechnologyDescription of the Programme
This challenging degree programme is designed for students who would like a strong foundation in computer science, coupled with significant advanced coursework in statistics. The training prepares students for professional or graduate work in statistics and computer science and for applications of computing in which knowledge of statistics is particularly important, such as data mining and machine learning. The programme is especially intended for students planning advanced study in computer science and statistics or for a career in the data-oriented applications of these disciplines to a wide variety of areas such as accounting, actuarial science, auditing, biostatistics, data management, financial analysis, hospital administration, long-range developmental planning, pharmaceuticals, traffic controls, and transportation management. The curriculum is designed to provide a broad introduction to the fundamentals of computer science including software, systems, programming languages, machine architecture and theoretical foundations of computing. Students will be well-grounded in the use of different applications software designed to perform singular or multiple related specific tasks. The course also introduces students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analysing and drawing conclusions from data. Students are exposed to exploring data, sampling and experimentation, exploring random phenomena using probability and simulation etc. The course is career-oriented in nature that opens many jobs after its completion.
