Agriculture & Enterprise DevelopmentDescription of the Programme
The leather and footwear industry are two areas that have received wide attention in recent years in Kenya and are part of the Government’s Big 4 Agenda. B.Sc in Leather Technology is comparatively a new programme that is gaining much importance in the industrial sector and deals with the synthesis, production and refining of leather so that it can be put into efficient use. It also deals with the synthesis of artificial leather and its efficient use to make commercial goods. The programme prepares graduates for entry into the leather industry and is based around a backbone of advanced leather technology. The programme has been developed in response to demand for leather skills amongst the top leather-using brands that include companies in the sports, luxury goods, footwear, automotive and fashion sectors. Work in the leather industry is a three tiered-design, manufacture and marketing. Designing involves creating new patterns in tune with the current trends in the fashion industry using Computer Aided Designing (CAD), a new technique newly introduced in this field. Manufacture involves the mass production of the design approved by the design team. Marketing ensures the ready market for these products.
