Description of the Programme

This degree programme is designed to develop comprehensive specialized knowledge in mathematics and a high level of sophistication in the application of mathematics. Modern computation, advances in scientific technology and the increasing production of data have all increased the scope for applications of mathematics well beyond the traditional areas of engineering and the physical sciences, to include fields such as finance, economics, information technology and molecular biology. There is an increasing recognition that graduates with high-level quantitative and analytic skills will play a key role at the forefront of new developments in these and other fields. In this degree program, you will gain analytical, problem-solving and quantitative skills to enable you to pursue a high-achieving career in mathematics or one of the many disciplines where it plays a significant role. The analytical, problem-solving and quantitative skills cultivated by mathematics students are not only versatile but also highly valued in government, education and industry. After securing a solid foundation of linear algebra, discrete mathematics, calculus, mathematical analysis and modeling among other topics, you will specialize in an area of your choice. You will gain an in-deep understanding of the foundations and applications of mathematics and be equipped for research within and beyond this degree. Mathematics is relevant and applicable across a wide range of disciplines where you can combine your knowledge with computational and modeling skills and use the latest technology to solve problems. Areas of specialization include Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Statistics and Operations Research.
