Description of the Programme

The Bachelor of Science in Occupational Health and Safety is a multidisciplinary degree programme designed to train occupational health & safety specialists who will be charged with the responsibility of ensuring safety in the workplace. Maintaining the safety, health and well-being of people while they work is both challenging and rewarding. You will be trained to evaluate places of work with regards to safety violations, air quality and other potential hazards such as chemical, physical, mechanical and biological hazards. Graduates will become experts in recognizing dangers, determining risk and making recommendations to employers. Combining studies of health, psychology, ethics and management with practical skills through internships, workplace visits and industry experience, you will learn scientific approaches to identifying, assessing and controlling chemical, physical and biological hazards. You will also learn about psychosocial health factors like stress, bullying, harassment and fatigue. With these key skills, you will be able to monitor and modify work environments; undertake training programmes; analyze workplace data; devise, evaluate and implement occupational health & safety management systems; undertake occupational health & safety auditing and inspections; complete accident investigations; and ensure compliance with legislation. The programme covers hazardous materials management; fundamentals of ergonomics; principles of industrial hygiene; fire prevention practices; health and safety laws; environmental regulations; etc.
