Health SciencesDescription of the Programme
Paramedics are medical practitioners who are the first responders to an accident, emergency, injury or distress. Being the first responders to life and death situations, paramedics face unpredictable, difficult and demanding situations and the decisions they make can be the difference between life and death. They are highly trained to make life-saving decisions under pressure in order to save lives and put patients and their families at ease during such difficult situations. The programme is therefore designed to equip students with the requisite techniques, knowledge and skills to treat patients in out-of-hospital care. You will explore all areas of paramedic practice including human pathophysiology, pharmacology, behavioural health, clinical leadership as well as ethical and legal issues in paramedic practice. You will develop an in-depth understanding of ethical and professional practice, communication and safe practice within the public health, cultural, social and clinical paramedical science environments. Some of the modules in the curriculum include trauma and advanced life support, diagnosis and clinical decision-making, ambulance placement and acute and critical illness among others.
