Description of the Programme Home Science is an integral part of the secorndary school curriculum in Kenya. The main purpose of the course is to provide students with knowledge and skills for personal development, family living and professional specialization. The skills learnt in Home Science are directly applicable in a wide variety of manufacturing and service industries and are crucial to help the country realize its industrialization goals. The course consists of three core areas: – Food and Nutrition including Food Science experiment a full meal management and community nutrition. Home Management including child care, household equipment, housing and furnishings and consumer economics. Clothing and Textiles to include flat pattern designing, clothing construction and costume and apparel design. Major topics in the core curriculum include Home Management, Food and Nutrition, Microbiology for Home Science, Principles of Economics, Institutional Management, Family Resource Management, Consumer Economics and Management, Community Nutrition, Costume and Apparel Design as well as Research Methods. Students will also be required to undertake a supervised Research Project. The programme is inter-diciplinary and other disciplines included in the course’s curriculum include physics, chemistry, sociology, food and nutrition, physiology, biology, economics, family and consumer sciences, rural development, family relations, clothing and textiles, etc. Minimum Entry Requirements through KUCCPS Minimum subject requirements Duration of the Programme 4 years equivalent to 8 semesters   Institutions offering the programme University of Eldoret   Related Programme Bachelor of Education (Home Science, with IT) Maseno University   Career Prospects On completion of the course, most graduates work in nutrition and dietics, fashion design, interior design, hotel/restaurant management, counselling, clothing and apparel design, consultanty, teaching and research among others.   Potential Employers Job opportunities exist in: Government ministries and departments such as Ministry of Agriculture, Health, Social Services, etc Secondary schools, colleges and universities Hotels Hospitals Food processing firms Bakery and Confectionery Shops Clothing and textile industries Local and international organizations on humanitarian assistance NGOs Hospitals Hotels, resorts and restaurant Emporiums and chain stores Consultancy firms   Further Study Options Master of Science (Fashion Design and Marketing) Ph.D in Fashion Design and Marketing
