Bachelor of Construction Management

Description of the Programme

This program has therefore been developed in response to industry needs and global trends for trained professionals in the construction industry. Construction is one of Kenya’s fastest-growing industries and will continue to expand in the coming years. Large infrastructure projects cost millions of shillings and take years to complete, so the need for construction managers to handle project time frames and budgets is critical. The training combines practical multi-faceted skills with theoretical knowledge and technical training. Studio-based projects and fieldwork form the major mode of training. The curriculum encompasses a comprehensive spectrum of construction management topics including property development economics, construction measurement and estimating, property management, project management, architectural communication, quantity surveying, leveling & surveying, building technology, civil engineering construction, computer skills, cost management, contracts administration, health and safety, construction and law, etc. Construction management will be understood from the beginning as a tool for converting the intentions of the designer into a materialized continuum perceptible via the senses.  For this reason, the imparting of purely theoretical knowledge will be kept to the absolute minimum required for understanding building construction whereas structural solutions will primarily be elaborated from the practical point of view.  In order to demonstrate to the students the form-creating function of the technical components during the process of design, great value will be attached to practical attitudes and a direct connection between design and construction.
