A Quantity surveyor is a construction professional who provides cost, contractual and economic advice on all aspects of the construction process. As a profession, quantity surveying requires a combination of economic, technical, managerial and legal skills. The Bachelor of Quantity Surveying is therefore designed to produce graduates with the competency to deliver such services. It provides students with a solid practical and theoretical base so that they are able to measure, value, cost and specify construction resources and to become active players in the rational identification, utilization and control of resources within the construction industry. The programme incorporates modern methods of measurement, alternative construction technology, changes in law and international trade in construction, professional computing packages such as computerized billing, new procurement procedures, contracts and construction law, project management, building economics and also environmental management in construction among other courses. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the role of a quantity surveyor at every stage of the design and construction process. That includes everything from the project brief issued to the lead consultant, to providing business strategy and advice, working with architects and overseeing actual on-site construction phase, completion, occupation and maintenance of the facilities so as to meet the objective of ‘value for money. Quantity surveyors also work alongside other engineers and land developers to define legal land boundaries and provide fundamental engineering support for large infrastructure projects, urban development, the development and operation of mines as well as the management of the environment and resources. You will develop excellent arithmetic, analytical, IT and problem-solving skills needed to succeed in this ever-evolving field. In addition to academic training, students will undergo practical training in a construction-related company or quantity surveying firm.
