Description of the Programme

Statistics is the scientific application of mathematical principles to the collection, analysis and presentation of numerical data. Many times, there is a disconnect between statistical theory and statistical application. Most statisticians produced, have a flare in the theory but have difficulty in analyzing statistical data especially one that requires the application of statistical software. This limits their analysis of data in many fields. Bachelor of Science in Applied Statistics is therefore structured to provide fundamental knowledge of the application of statistics in various fields such as biological and physical sciences, agricultural, business, finance, economics, engineering, medicine, public health, psychology, marketing, education and sports and many other fields. Students will learn to effectively apply statistics to problems in data analysis, quality control, reliability analysis, experimental design, survey sampling and statistical forecasting. In addition, students learn the important skills of designing an experiment, selecting and formulating appropriate statistical models, interpreting and analyzing data and communicating the results in written and oral form. It also provides the students with a strong foundation in the use of various statistical computing packages. The program covers major areas of Applied Statistics including Mathematical Statistics, Economic Statistics, Demography & Social Statistics, Actuarial Science, Financial Economics etc. Students will become experts in the use of quantitative tools for experimental research and scientific data analysis and this gives them an advantage in the fields of business, government and industry among others.
