Description of the Programme
The Bachelor of Science in Forestry is an interdisciplinary degree programme that prepares graduates for managing forest resources for a broad array of uses and purposes. Graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to address pressing natural resource, environmental and energy issues. The programme also provides broad coverage of the biological, physical, management, technological and social fundamentals of forestry that are relevant in any ecosystem and political jurisdiction upon which forest resource management is based. It also places additional emphasis on the operational aspects of forestry. Students will also develop a solid background in wildlife and watershed issues, mapping and other necessary skills. The programme will help you understand the forest through courses in forest and wildlife ecology, soil chemistry, dendrology (the scientific study of trees), forest surveying, GIS and remote sensing, landscape ecology, tropical forestry and agroforestry, forest management techniques, forest economics, sociology, statistics, hydrology, law, policy, and conservation etc. It also equips you to acquire and analyze information about the forest using advanced technologies such as GIS, GPS, growth and yield models, forest estate models, etc. Outside of the classroom, students bolster their education through field trips, laboratories and professional internships.
