Architecture, Design & PlanningDescription of the Programme
Urban design is the process of shaping the physical setting for life in cities, towns and villages. It involves the design of buildings, groups of buildings, spaces and landscapes and establishing the processes that make successful development possible. It focuses on the intersections between architecture, landscape architecture, planning & geography and infrastructure. It is concerned with the arrangement, appearance and functionality of towns and cities with a particular interest in the shape and uses of urban public space. It is therefore founded upon the social, environmental, political, aesthetic and economic importance of design in the public realm, serving the public interest. The course structure is pivoted around the design studio with lecture inputs in supporting subjects, aided by tutorials, seminars, field exercises and workshop instructions. The course aims to equip the student to comprehend spatial planning at different scales: regional planning and development; urban planning and design; rural planning and development; site planning and design; and land use planning.
